How to Ease Aligner Discomfort

Candid Pro Clear Aligners are generally found to be much more comfortable than traditional braces, but that doesn’t mean you won’t experience any discomfort at all during your treatment. Thankfully, when you do it is usually minimal, and doesn’t typically last long. Here are some helpful suggestions for how to get relief.

Eat Soft Foods

If your teeth are sore from your new aligners, be sure to be gentle with them during meals.  Stick to soft foods, when possible, to allow your teeth a break and give them some time to adjust to their new position.

Try a Cold Compress

If you are feeling any discomfort in a concentrated area, hold a cold compress to it. This should help reduce pain without causing sensitivity.

Stick to the Plan

Be sure to follow the treatment plan designed by your dentist. Wear your aligners for 22 hours each day (no more, no less) and be sure to switch to a new pair on the prescribed schedule. Keeping them longer than instructed or swapping them sooner than instructed can cause not just unnecessary discomfort, but it can also make your treatment take longer than anticipated.

Wax On, Wax Off

If you are feeling any sharp edges, orthodontic wax is a great way to provide some cushion between your mouth and your aligners. Do not attempt to remove portions that are poking or irritating you; instead, speak to your dentist and come in for an adjustment so you don’t accidentally damage the aligner.

Keep it Clean

Keep your mouth and your aligners clean. Remove them each time you consume anything but water and be sure to rinse them well when you take them out. Be sure to brush your teeth and floss after each meal before putting them back in and remove them at least once a day to give them a thorough cleaning. You can do this by gently scrubbing them with a soft bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste and then rinsing them off completely. Additionally, you can soak them in a clear retainer soak, but this should never replace brushing them.

Try Over-The-Counter Pain Medication

While most discomfort from your aligners will be mild, you may occasionally need an over-the-counter pain medication to get some additional relief. Speak to your dentist about your medical history so he or she can help determine which type is best for you.

Remember, the pain from clear aligners should be minimal and temporary, but these tips should help you find some relief if you need it. If you have any questions or concerns about any discomfort during treatment, speak to your dentist at once.
