Dental implants are the best tooth replacement method out there. In addition to looking great, they replace the roots of the missing teeth, allowing for optimal comfort, stability, and longevity. To achieve this, getting dental implants requires a multi-step process, including a surgical procedure. To promote an efficient recovery period, it’s important that you avoid the following as your mouth is healing.
Smoking
Dental implants rely on a process called “osseointegration. This is when the jawbone and dental implants fuse together, making the dental implant a part of your body. If you are smoking or using other tobacco products, you can slow down this healing process. Ultimately, it is best to refrain from smoking completely for a week before and several months following your procedure. This is also a great time to give up the bad habit for good.
Rinsing Vigorously
Swishing your mouth with salt water is an excellent way to promote healing. However, you need to be careful not to do it to vigorously. This can disturb the surgical site and result in bleeding. When you clean your teeth, you can gently swish water, salt water, or mouthwash around. Just remember not to spit either. Instead, allow the liquid to flow out of your mouth into the sink.
Using Straws
When you use a straw to drink, you create a suction in your mouth and can potentially dislodge the blood clot that has formed over the implant site. This can result in dry socket – a painful condition that requires help from a dental professional.
Hard and Hot Foods
For several days following your surgery, stick to a soft-food diet. You should also avoid foods that are particularly spicy or hot. Try to chew on the opposite side of your mouth as the dental implants too. This way, you are less likely to disturb the healing process.
Intense Exercise
Getting lots of exercise is necessary to maintain a healthy lifestyle. However, intense physical activity increases blood flow to the site, increasing bleeding as well. If you partake in strenuous exercise, it’s best to take a little break after your procedure. If your job is physically demanding, take a few days off to rest.
To help your recovery go comfortably and smoothly, avoid the things listed above. You will be showing off your complete smile in just a matter of time!
